Displacement Transducers (LVDT's)     [Back ]

Linear Variable Displacement Transducer - In general, used for length - displacement type measurements that will contact the device or a transfer object with the unit under test. LVDTs are manufactured in spring loaded, ball bearing guided and free un-guided configurations to suit the applications, some vendors also offer the probes with pneumatic extension and contraction of the armaturel. LVDTs can be AC or DC voltage operated. Typically, if the environment is harsh due to mechanical, electrical or fluid conditions, an AC LVDT which does not contain electronics is useful due to its durability, temperature variance error and size restrictions. A DC LVDT is more general purpose in nature since it is powered on a DC voltage source and will output a DC Voltage (typically +/5 or 10 Vdc) or a current loop output; simplifying the application since external AC Modulation and Demodulation circuitry is not necessary as in the case of an AC LVDT.
