These
Digital Panel Meter (DPM) models accept
current signals within the ISA standard range of 4 to 20 milliamperes.
They can also be used to produce scalable readout from strain
gages, or in potentiometer follower applications, where the
transducer output is a changing resistance.
(Strain gages with a 20-mV output can be scaled to display up to
10,000 counts, while outputs of 200 mV can be scaled to 99,999 counts.)
The
isolated 24 V-DC, 50-mA excitation output (which is standard for all 2000
Series DPM's) is ideal for powering external two-wire, 4-20 mA
transmitters (see the figure below; when powering strain gages or
potentiometers, the 5- or 10 V-DC excitation is monitored by the meter to
eliminate errors caused by excitation voltage variations).
The same two wires are used to apply voltage and carry the output
current. Inside the meter,
the 4-20 mA current is dropped across a 10-Ω resistor.
The resulting 40- to 200-mV voltage is then sensed by the meter and
scaled to engineering units.

The
"X" version (Model 2162X) allows custom scaling,
as specified by the user at the time of order (specify minimum input
value, minimum displayed reading, maximum input value, and maximum
displayed reading). Contact the
factory for more details.
All
current ranges for the 2162 and 2162X are calibrated at the factory, with
calibration factors for each range stored in internal EEPROM.
This allows ranges to be changed in the field without having to
recalibrate the meter.
As
with all 2000 Series DPM’s, the peak value of the input signal is
automatically captured and may be displayed
via front-panel push button or a control signal received at the rear
connector (since the last meter reset). Data readings and outputs can be separately selected to be
either filtered or unfiltered.
See Digital Panel Meters (DPM’s)
for a full description of these and other standard DPM features.

In actuality, the 2162/2162X accommodates all four input ranges of the Model
2161 DC Current Meter, with identical values of resolution, input
ohms, and error.
Voltage
input ranges of the 2162/2162X—and corresponding resolution, input ohms,
and error—are identical to those of the Model
2160 DC Voltage Meter. |
