"D" and "E" Options

Serial Interface Options (RS232 / RS485)

For both the "D" and "E" options, serial communication are via a 4- or 6-conductor phone cable that plugs into a standard RJ-11 phone jack on the rear of the serial interface board  Both RS232 and RS485 interfaces are isolated from meter and power grounds.

The information transmitted via RS232 or RS485 includes the latest signal value (filtered or unfiltered), peak signal value, and alarm values and status.  Using the optional RS232 or RS485 interface, a 2000 Series meter can serve as a Remote Display for an external device or for another 2000 instrument.

With either option, 2000 Series Setup Software is available free of charge that simplifies the logging of measurement data on the computer and allows remote setup of the 2000 Series instrument via the computer, without having to use the front-panel push buttons.

RS232 Interface Option ("D")     [Top ]

An optional plug-in board makes any 2000 unit capable of bidirectional point-to-point serial communications.  The instrument can then be programmed by a computer, output data to a computer at standard baud rates from 300 through 19200 (as shown in the figure below), or drive another digital device with an RS232 interface (a panel-mount printer, remote display, etc.).

Normally, there can be only one conditioner or counter meter per RS232 line, as in the figure below.  However, multiple Remote Displays can be connected to a single RS232 line in multidrop fashion.

RS232 communications are full duplex only.  The RS232 Request-to-Send (RTS) line can be set to a latched mode, where a single reading is transmitted when the line is taken high (this allows a single data transfer to be commanded by a device other than a computer).

Point-to-Point RS232 Communications

RS485 Interface Option ("E")     [Top ]

An optional plug-in board makes any 2000 unit capable of bidirectional multidrop communications, where each device has its own unique digital address.  Up to 31 addresses are provided for, so that multiple 2000 instruments can be addressed and transmit on the same data line (see the figure below).

In general, the use of RS485 lines maximizes the utilization of computer ports and simplifies plant wiring.  As opposed to RS232 cabling, it uses only two pairs of balanced lines, which allows long cable runs (up to one mile) in electrically noisy environments.

Data rates are selectable from 300 through 19200 baud.  In the case of a long line length, the RS485 board at the end of the line can be terminated by a jumper-selectable 120-ohm resistor to minimize signal reflections.  The RS485 option offers both full duplex mode (with separate wire pairs for "Transmit" and "Receive") and half-duplex mode (with shared "Transmit" and "Receive").

The RS485 option allows multiple 2000 DPM's, Counter Meters, and Remote Displays—as well as other Daytronic and non-Daytronic instruments—to be connected to the same RS485 line in parallel, multidrop fashion

Remote Display Units     [Top ]

2000 Series Remote Display Units accept RS232 or RS485 inputs from computers, PLC's, etc., and provide 6-digit data display from -999,999 to +999,999.  Like all 2000 DPM's and Counter Meters, they can also provide remote alarm and analog output capability.

Up to 31 remote displays can be included on an RS485 serial data line, and up to 5 on an RS232 data line. Also, the data display of a 2000 Counter Meter can be augmented by up to three local or remote display units, to show up to four parameters simultaneously.  Contact the factory for further information.
